Why Cupid’s Love Potion Works on Valentine’s Day

The Funny (and Totally True*) History of Why Cupid’s Love Potion Works on Valentine’s Day

A long, long time ago, Cupid wasn’t the seasoned love expert we know today. In fact, he was more of an enthusiastic intern in the business of matchmaking—adorable, yes, but prone to rookie mistakes. Back then, Cupid’s primary tools were his trusty bow and arrow, and while his aim was decent, the results? Let’s just say they were... complicated.

Sure, some of his arrows sparked true love, but others led to awkward crushes (like that one time someone fell in love with a goat), or even worse, unrequited feelings that Cupid had to awkwardly fix later. Determined to perfect his craft, Cupid dabbled in all sorts of love-enhancing ideas. He tried enchanted chocolates (too melty), handwritten poetry (nobody could read his handwriting), and even serenading potential couples with his harp (turns out, he’s tone-deaf). Nothing seemed to work consistently.

Then, Cupid flew over a beautiful field of roses one fateful Valentine's Day when he tripped—yes, even mythical beings have clumsy days—and accidentally upended his latest batch of experimental love potion. The potion spilled all over the roses, soaking into their petals. Flustered, Cupid didn’t think much of it until something magical started happening.

The people who received those roses didn’t just smile—they glowed. Couples who had grown distant began holding hands again. Secret admirers finally confessed their feelings. Even the grumpiest of souls softened under the spell of the blooms. Cupid was stunned. Could his love potion work best when paired with the natural beauty and fragrance of flowers?

From that day forward, Cupid ditched the harp and poetry (and thankfully the goat situation) and put all his trust in flowers. Roses, lilies, hydrangeas—you name it. He even started sprinkling a little extra magic on bouquets for special occasions like Valentine’s Day. Word spread quickly, and soon, flowers became the ultimate symbol of love.

P.S. Okay, maybe not totally true*, but it’s more fun this way, don’t you think?
